the obama years. more people are getting heating assistance, cell phones. you name it, you can get more of it in the obama years. point is there is no plan to rein this in. the president is adamantly opposed to any spending cuts or any reining in of these run-away programs. >>gretchen: one in six americans now on food stamps. i think one in four children, i've heard, are on food stamps. >> 19.9 million children are fed by the federal government. >>gretchen: you know what comes to mind is i wonder what president bill clinton thinks about this. he's been an advocate of president obama, obviously helping him get reelected, but he was in charge of welfare reform. a lot of these things have been rolled back. i'm wondering what he thinks about this. >> i don't think he's said anything. he's been a big supporter of president obama in the election campaign last year, but i don't think welfare reform and the reversal of reform ever came up. i don't know what he thinks about this. >>steve: this could be one of the indicators why fitch is talking about down grading the u.s. debt once again. >> pre

districts across the country. the coalition that elected president obama this year more than ever this democratic coalition is bunched into the metropolitan areas. the statistics that jumps out at me is this. in 1988 when michael dukakis got flattened in the presidential race he won over 800 counties nationally. this year getting re-elected by 5 million votes, barack obama won only 690 counties. the democrat vote is so tightly bunched into these areas, you have these wide swaths of district after district after district that do not look like the rest of america, that are not evolving like the rest of america but they're electing conservative republicans whose only fear is not being conservative enough in a primary in a district like that. >> ari, to nia-malika's point earlier, frank luntz talks about presentation and language, but it's about policy, isn't it? if you have got a presidential candidate who recommends self-deportation, if your favored television network insults asians, african-americans routinely, what do you expect immigrants to think of your party? >> i think that's

, six years, even before he endorsed barack obama the first time, i would get attacked for associating with colin powell's very conservative with a small "c" realist approach that republican presidents followed for years. it was the weinberger doctrine. it was the reagan doctrine. it was the powell doctrine. and suddenly, it became the doctrine of lefties? >> colin powell is a self-identified republican and has been for many, many years. and with each passing year, with each passing election cycle, the republican party, too many within the republican party, try to further estrange him from the republican party platform, from much of what is said publicly by a lot of republicans. colin powell is also a guy who has the ability and the belief that a lot of republicans -- not a lot -- but too many republicans and too many democrats don't have, he has the ability and the belief to put country ahead of party. and that's unfortunately something that's passe in washington. >> the problem, leigh, though is there are, you know, we're here in new york. or washington or boston or l.a. and the conv

be the case. we're learning president obama will hold his first news conference of his second term, certainly of the new year, 2013, that will happen 11:15 this morning in the east room. it is an open press event. perhaps the reason for this is his push on immigration. we may hear some of that at the top of this news conference what he hopes to accomplish there in terms of comprehensive immigration reform. no doubt there will be questions though about the debt ceiling and how the president expects to make up those revenues, whether he will try to do that to increase taxes one form or another. there will be a lot of questions this morning perhaps on afghanistan as well. that comes up 1:15 this morning and that comes up here on fox news. bill: you wonder if his answers parallel with what senator lee was talking about or whether they go in an entirely different direction. that is where the battle lines draw on this new term. martha: correction. this will be the last press conference of the last term because the inauguration is coming up. bill: duly noted. a week from today, "america's newsroom"
